A study by Malmo University’s Dentistry Faculty revealed that the jaws of a group of dentists slowly shrank over a period of 40 years. At the end of the study, the jaws of the subjects had shrunk by a substantial amount – a few millimeters, which can significantly reduce the room available for the teeth. It resulted in crowding, especially along the lower jaws.
The amount of shrinkage varied by subject, suggesting the cause is hereditary.
