FAQ About Laser Dentistry

q. What is a dental laser?
A laser is a high-technology device that generated a beam of concentrated light. The beam of light brings energy into your mouth to help your dentist to remove areas of infection with great precision and accuracy. The laser sterilizes the affected area and seals off blood vessels, which minimizes the chance of infection and bleeding. Laser dental patients are much more comfortable both during and after treatment. That’s because, in many instances, the need for anesthetic injections is reduced and in some instances eliminated as well as associated side effects. And that means less time spent in dental chair!

q. Are lasers new to dentistry?
a. Shortly after the invention of lasers in the early 1960s, lasers were used experimentally in the teeth and gums. Lasers have been used effectively in the dental office on patients. The advent of the WaterLase has opened new frontiers for dental patients. This laser is very different from all other lasers and offers more options and more comfort for the patient due to its patented use of the water cooling spray.

q. How does Waterlase work?
WaterLase uses the hydrokinetic energy. The hydrokinetic process is the removal of tissues with YSGG laser-energized water droplets. Hydrokinetic energy produced by combining a spray of atomized water with laser.

q. What are the benefits of the Hydrokinetic laser?

  • Heat and vibration are the causes of most of the pain associated with the drill. Since hydrokinetic cutting does not transmit heat of vibration, most dental procedures can be performed with no pain, virtually eliminating the need for anesthesia in most cases
  • The laser’s pinpoint accuracy is precise enough that your dentist can leave behind as much healthy tooth structure as possible, allowing you to keep your own teeth longer.
  • Effectively performs numerous soft tissues (gums) procedures with little or no bleeding.
  • The laser sterilizes as it cuts, leaving less chance for bacterial contamination
